John Gregg UTTERBACK, Congress, ME (1872-1955)

UTTERBACK, John Gregg, (cousin of Hubert Utterback), a Representative from Maine; born in Franklin, Johnson County, Ind., July 12, 1872; attended the public schools of his native city; employed in a carriage factory 1889-1892; engaged as a traveling salesman 1892-1905, during which time he resided in Jackson, Mich., Rochester, N.Y., and Winchester, Mass.; settled in Bangor, Maine, in 1905 and engaged in the retail sale of carriages and later in the retail sale of automobiles; served as councilman in 1912 and 1913, as alderman in 1913 and 1914, and as mayor of Bangor in 1914 and 1915; chairman of the Maine Motor Vehicle Conference Committee in 1930; delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1932; elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-third Congress (March 4, 1933-January 3, 1935); was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1934 to the Seventy-fourth Congress; was appointed a United States marshal for the district of Maine in 1935 and served until his resignation in 1944; resumed the automobile business and was president of the Utterback Corp.; died in Bangor, Maine, July 11, 1955; interment in Mount Hope Cemetery.
