Lemuel TODD, Congress, PA (1817-1891)
TODD, Lemuel, a Representative from Pennsylvania; born in Carlisle, Pa., July 29, 1817; pursued classical studies, and was graduated from Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa., in 1839; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1841 and commenced practice in Carlisle; elected as a Republican to the Thirty-fourth Congress (March 4, 1855-March 3, 1857); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1856 to the Thirty-fifth Congress; during the Civil War served in the Union Army as major of the First Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Reserve Corps; inspector general of Pennsylvania on the Governorâs staff; elected as a Republican to the Forty-third Congress (March 4, 1873-March 3, 1875); was not a candidate for renomination in 1874; resumed the practice of law; died in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pa., May 12, 1891; interment in Ashland Cemetery.
