LOWNDES, Lloyd, Jr., a Representative from Maryland; born in Clarksburg, Harrison County, Va. (now West Virginia), February 21, 1845; attended the common schools; was graduated from Allegheny College, Meadville, Pa., in 1865 and from the law department of the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia in 1867; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Cumberland, Md.; elected as a Republican to the Forty-third Congress (March 4, 1873-March 3, 1875); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1874 to the Forty-fourth Congress; engaged in banking; Governor of Maryland 1895-1899; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1898; died in Cumberland, Md., January 8, 1905; interment in Rose Hill Cemetery.
