Moses HAMPTON, Congress, PA (1803-1878)
HAMPTON, Moses, a Representative from Pennsylvania; born in Beaver, Beaver County, Pa., October 28, 1803; moved with his parents to Trumbull County, Ohio; pursued classical studies and was graduated from Washington College (now Washington and Jefferson University), Washington, Pa., in 1827; studied law in Uniontown; was admitted to the bar in 1829 and commenced practice in Somerset; moved to Pittsburgh in 1838 and continued the practice of law; elected as a Whig to the Thirtieth and Thirty-first Congresses (March 4, 1847-March 3, 1851); was not a candidate for renomination in 1850; president judge of the Allegheny County District Court 1853-1873; died at his home, âHampton Place,â adjoining the village of Wilkinsburg, Allegheny County, Pa., June 27, 1878; interment in Allegheny Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Pa.
