Philip Barton KEY, Congress, MD (1757-1815)
KEY, Philip Barton, (cousin of Philip Key), a Representative from Maryland; born near Charlestown, Cecil County, Md., April 12, 1757; pursued an academic course; served in the British Army during the Revolutionary War; taken prisoner in Florida and went to England; released on parole; returned to Maryland in 1785; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1787 and practiced law in Leonardtown, Md.; moved to Annapolis in 1790; member of the State house of delegates 1794-1799; nominated to the Fourth United States Circuit Court on February 25, 1801; in the fall of 1806 moved to Montgomery County and became interested in agricultural pursuits; elected as a Federalist to the Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth Congresses (March 4, 1807-March 3, 1813); chairman, Committee on District of Columbia (Tenth Congress); died in Georgetown, D.C., July 28, 1815; interment on his estate âWoodley,â in Georgetown, D.C.; reinterment in Oak Hill Cemetery, Washington, D.C.
