Philip KNOPF, Congress, IL (1847-1920)
KNOPF, Philip, a Representative from Illinois; born near Long Grove, Lake County, Ill., November 18, 1847; attended the public schools; during the Civil War enlisted in Company I, One Hundred and Forty-seventh Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and served until the regiment was mustered out in Savannah, Ga.; moved to Chicago in 1866 and attended Bryant and Strattonâs College for one year; engaged in the teaming business until 1884, when he was appointed chief deputy coroner and served eight years; member of the State senate 1886-1894; clerk of Cook County 1894-1902; delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1896; member of the State central committee; elected as a Republican to the Fifty-eighth, Fifty-ninth, and Sixtieth Congresses (March 4, 1903-March 3, 1909); chairman, Committee on Expenditures in the Department of the Treasury (Fifty-ninth and Sixtieth Congresses); died in Chicago, Ill., August 14, 1920; interment in Rosehill Cemetery.
