Culver 1965-1972; elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1972 and served from January 3, 1973, to January 3, 1979; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1978; appointed by President Jimmy Carter to be Ambassador at Large and United States Coordinator for Refugee Affairs 1979; senior fellow and director of Congressional Program at the Aspen Institute1980-; is a resident of Washington, D.C.
