Stephen Decatur LINDSEY, Congress, ME (1828-1884)
LINDSEY, Stephen Decatur, a Representative from Maine; born in Norridgewock, Somerset County, Maine, March 3, 1828; attended the common schools and Broomfield Academy; studied law; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Norridgewock in 1853; clerk of the judicial courts in Somerset County 1857-1860; member of the State house of representatives in 1856; served in the State senate 1868-1870 and was president of that body in 1869; delegate to the Republican National Conventions in 1860 and 1868; member of the executive council of Maine in 1874; elected as Republican to the Forty-fifth, Forty-sixth, and Forty-seventh Congresses (March 4, 1877-March 3, 1883); was not a candidate for renomination in 1882 to the Forty-eighth Congress; resumed the practice of his profession; died in Norridgewock, Somerset County, Maine, on April 26, 1884; interment in River View Cemetery.
