William CLARK, Congress, PA (1774-1851)

CLARK, William, a Representative from Pennsylvania; born in Dauphin, Pa., February 18, 1774; captain of militia in Dauphin County in 1793 and 1795; went to Crawford County, Pa., early in life; was associate judge of Crawford County 1803-1818; brigade inspector of the western district of Pennsylvania 1800-1817; participated in the War of 1812; was on board the flagship Lawrence in her first engagement with the British fleet on Lake Erie; secretary of the Pennsylvania land office 1818-1821; State treasurer 1821-1827; Treasurer of the United States from June 4, 1828, to November 1829; elected as an Anti-Masonic candidate to the Twenty-third and Twenty-fourth Congresses (March 4, 1833-March 3, 1837); member of the State constitutional revision commission in 1837; engaged in agricultural pursuits; died near Dauphin, Pa., March 28, 1851; interment in English Presbyterian Cemetery.
