William Evans ARTHUR, Congress, KY (1825-1897)

ARTHUR, William Evans, a Representative from Kentucky; born in Cincinnati, Ohio, March 3, 1825; moved with his parents to Covington, Ky., where he received instruction from private tutors and also in private schools; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1850 and commenced practice in Covington; Commonwealth attorney for the ninth judicial district of Kentucky 1856-1862; presidential elector on the Democratic ticket of Breckinridge and Lane in 1860; appointed judge of the ninth judicial circuit in 1866 and served until 1868, when he resigned; elected as a Democrat to the Forty-second and Forty-third Congresses (March 4, 1871-March 3, 1875); was not a candidate for renomination in 1874; resumed the practice of law in Covington; became judge of the twelfth judicial circuit of Kentucky in 1886 and served until 1893, when he resigned; engaged in the practice of law until his death in Covington, Ky., May 18, 1897; interment in Linden Grove Cemetery.
