William Markle BERLIN, Congress, PA (1880-1962)

BERLIN, William Markle, a Representative from Pennsylvania; born on a farm near Delmont, Westmoreland County, Pa., March 29, 1880; attended the public schools; was graduated from Laird Institute at Murrysville, Pa., in 1896; moved to Greensburg, Pa., in 1916 and engaged as an automobile distributor, in the wholesale oil and gas business, and in coal mining; chairman of the Democratic County Committee in 1916; elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-third and Seventy-fourth Congresses (March 4, 1933-January 3, 1937); unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1936; clerk of the court of Westmoreland County, Pa., 1937-1941; resumed the mining of coal in Pennsylvania and West Virginia in 1941; delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in 1944; unsuccessful for the Republican congressional nomination in 1950; assistant librarian, United States House of Representatives, February 1, 1957, until 1961 when promoted to librarian, and served in that capacity until his death in Greensburg, Pa., October 14, 1962; interment in Westmoreland County Memorial Park.
