William MOORE, Congress, NJ (1810-1878)

MOORE, William, a Representative from New Jersey; born in Norristown, Montgomery County, Pa., December 25, 1810; attended private schools for a short time; became engaged in mercantile pursuits and later in ironworks; moved to New Jersey in 1845 and settled in Weymouth; engaged in the iron business; also became interested in the building and sailing of vessels and in the development of banks and other financial institutions; judge of the court of common pleas for Atlantic County 1855-1865; was one of the founders of the Republican Party and a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1856; moved to Mays Landing, N.J., in 1865 and engaged in the shipbuilding business, in banking, and in the iron industry; elected as a Republican to the Fortieth and Forty-first Congresses (March 4, 1867-March 3, 1871); chairman, Committee on Expenditures in the Post Office Department (Forty-first Congress); unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1870; resumed his former business pursuits; served in the State senate 1872-1875; died at Mays Landing, N.J., April 26, 1878; interment in Union Cemetery.
