BLACKLEDGE, William Salter, (son of William Blackledge), a Representative from North Carolina; born in Pitt County, N.C., in 1793; moved to Craven County, N.C., and settled in New Bern; graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1813; member of the State house of commons in 1820; elected as a Republican to the Sixteenth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Jesse Slocumb; reelected as a Republican to the Seventeenth Congress and served from February 7, 1821, until March 3, 1823; died in New Bern, Craven County, N.C., March 21, 1857; interment in New Bern Cemetery.
