The Queen Mother

Queen Elizabeth II

Duke and Duchess of Gloucester

The third daughter of the Duke of Buccleuch, Lady Alice Montagu Douglas Scott was born on Christmas Day, 1901. She married Henry, Duke of Gloucester, the third son of King George V, and younger brother of King George VI, in 1935. Princess Alice is Queen Elizabeth's aunt.

An avid skier and an accomplished watercolor painter, Princess Alice has traveled widely, living in Kenya for several months and visiting India. From 1945 to 1947, she lived in Australia, where her husband served as governor-general.

The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester had two sons. Prince Willia was born in 1941 and killed in a flying accident in 1972, and Prince Richard is the present Duke of Gloucester. Princess Alice has three grandchildren.

After her husband died in 1974, she became known as Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, to distinguish herself from the present Duchess of Gloucester, her daughter-in-law.

She died in October 2004, just two months shy of her 103rd birthday, the longest living member of the British royal family.
