On this date in 1962, the Columbus Day "Big Blow" struck the Pacific Northwest. Wind reached hurricane strength, topping out at more than 150 mph. An entire season of lumber was wiped out. The wind-blown debris clogged waterways and led to flooding. The storm claimed 48 lives and caused more than $200 million in damages.
