Kingman Reef, located about 1,000 mi south of Hawaii, was discovered by Capt. E. Fanning in 1798 but named for Capt. W. E. Kingman, who rediscovered it in 1853. Triangular in shape, it is about 9.5 mi long. A U.S. possession since 1922, Kingman Reef is a Naval Defensive Sea Area and Airspace Reservation and is closed to the public.
