Alex's Time Travel Essay

Alex is a fifth-grade student at Rockport Elementary School in Massachusetts. He wrote this essay about time travel.
If I had a time machine I would go back in time to the American Revolution. I would like to see what it would be like to be in the war. The day I would choose to visit would be April 18, 1775, during the battle of Lexington and Concord. This battle was the first battle of the American Revolution.
There were guns everywhere. Some guns had big things on the end of them that were shaped like a tip of a knife. All the soldiers were gathered on the Lexington Green. The British were all wearing red. The Americans were wearing everyday farming clothes. The Americans were out numbered 70 to 700. I could feel their fear of getting shot.
I was terrified! I could feel my knees shake, and I felt like I had a huge knot in my stomach. I was most terrified of getting shot. The bullets whizzed by within an inch of my head. Everyone was getting hit with bullets and falling to the ground, screaming in pain. Luckily, I did not get shot. The phrase, "the shot heard around the world," came from this battle.
After the battle in Lexington, there was a small battle at the North Bridge in Concord. American soldiers came from all different towns to help in the battle. American soldiers were hiding behind walls and trees as they chased the British all the way back to Boston, shooting at them the whole time.
I learned that it was not fun to be in the American Revolution. I also felt bad for all the people that got shot. But in the end, the Americans won the battle of Lexington and Concord, and this was the beginning of independence for all Americans.
