Nick is a fifth-grade student at Rockport Elementary School in Massachusetts. He wrote this essay about time travel.
One morning I woke up from a great dream. I had dreamt about crossing the Delaware River with George Washington. As I was getting out of bed, I suddenly heard George Washington's thundering voice talking to his large crew. Out of nowhere I heard someone talking to me. It was George Washington! He asked me what I was doing here. I had no idea, but I had all sorts of weapons.
I answered, "I guess I'm here to fight in war with you."
"You're fighting! You can hardly row a boat without losing your breath," said General Washington.
"Why you little," I murmured quietly, feeling like I wanted to choke him like Homer did to Bart on The Simpsons. "Heave Ho, I'll show you," I said to myself. I pushed one of the rowers aside and started rowing. Then I suddenly heard someone shot "fire!"
I gave the oars back to the rower and loaded my missile launcher and Boom! I hit 30 British soldiers!
I set my pistols and pang, pang, pang, two missed and one hit. All I had left was a dagger and sword, which meant I had to go up close. "It's a risk I'll have to take," I thought. I heard a huge gun shot and I threw my pistols into the freezing water.
All of a sudden an ally was shot. I took his musket and tweaked it up. My only hope was to go to the front line and stand with people who could protect me. I was scared, but I tried to be brave for General Washington. We marched as quietly as we could to Trenton. We had a small battle with the British and Hessians. A bullet was shot, and I could see it whiz past my head. Right before it hit me, I woke up. I can't believe it was only a dream. It felt so real!
